CAMPBELL

Campbell police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-pound Rottweiler mix named Frank after it and a Newfoundland named Bourbon got loose from the Princess Street home of Teah Rosemary Keshock-Crew and were running around the neighborhood.

The man who killed Frank, Brandon E. Stores, also of Princess Street, called police and said the dog was attacking his 12-year-old niece, but before police arrived the dog had been killed, said Patrolman Rob Vukovich.

When police arrived, the juvenile was inside her house and Stores had left. The juvenile had mud on her pants and a chipped tooth she said occurred when the dog knocked her to the ground, Vukovich said.

When Crew arrived home from work, she and her husband discovered the dogs were loose. They believe they went outside through the front door left ajar by a U.S. Postal Service employee who opened it to place packages inside out of the rain.

The Crews had caught Bourbon, who she said is the dog that frightened the girl, when they heard several shots.

Crew said she went to the door and found Frank on the front porch bleeding. He was taken to a veterinarian, where he died. She said the vet said Frank was shot four times, three times in the chest and once in the hip.

Stores told police that after the girl was in the house, he came back to the scene and said the dog was being aggressive toward him and that he had to shoot it to protect himself, Vukovich said.

The shooting and the circumstances surrounding it are under investigation.

No charges had been filed as of Thursday.
