Man killed by deputy in Ohio standoff identified

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An armed man who authorities say was fatally shot by a deputy during a standoff at a house in eastern Ohio has been identified.

Muskingum County sheriff’s officials say 28-year-old Arthur Wayne West Jr. was killed Saturday night after a woman called to report a man with a gun threatening her and her children. Authorities say she later reported the man had taken her children hostage and was firing a gun.

The woman and children escaped uninjured. Deputies say West told a sheriff’s negotiator by phone that he was going to “commit suicide by cop” and was shot when he pointed a gun at deputies from a window

The name of the deputy who fired the shot hasn’t been released. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
