Sentencing delayed for ex-fugitive deep-sea treasure hunter

COLUMBUS (AP) — A federal judge has delayed sentencing for a deep-sea treasure hunter who pleaded guilty to contempt of court after spending years as a fugitive.

Tommy Thompson went missing three years ago amid demands that he appear in court to account for missing gold coins and other assets taken after the discovery of a historic shipwreck. He and his longtime companion were apprehended in January at a hotel where he was living near Boca Raton, Florida.

The 63-year-old Thompson was scheduled for sentencing Friday. Judge Algenon Marbley agreed Monday to reschedule until Nov. 24 at the request of Thompson’s new lawyer in Ohio.

Columbus attorney Sam Shamansky says he needs time to get up to speed on the case.

Thompson faces two years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
