YPD finds two stolen guns Sunday
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested two people on weapons offenses in separate traffic stops Sunday afternoon that yielded two stolen guns.
Raheem Johnson, 19, of Benford Avenue, was booked into the Mahoning County jail on charges of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, being a felon in illegal possession of a firearm, as well as a probation violation on a charge of aggravated riot, reports said.
Reports said Johnson was the driver of a car pulled over about 2:25 p.m. at Steel Street and Manhattan Avenue on the West Side by Officer Mark Sember because the plates on the car were expired.
When Johnson was taken out of the car because of the probation violation, police found a .40-caliber handgun on the driver’s-side floor. A records check showed the gun had been reported stolen from Trumbull County, reports said.
About 4:50 p.m., Angelique McKinney, 34, of Park Avenue, was booked into the jail on a charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Reports said McKinney was a passenger in a car driven by Christin Cylar, 25, address not given, that was pulled over at Covington and Harlem avenues on the North Side by officers George Anderson and Kristina Vaughan for an improper turn.
Reports said there was a strong odor of marijuana in the car, and remnants of two smoked marijuana cigarettes and two bags of suspected marijuana were found inside the car.
Police then searched the trunk and found a handgun in a purse and two empty magazines of ammunition. Also in the trunk was a loaded 9 mm Ruger.
Reports said Cylar told police she had a concealed-carry permit, and she and McKinney had been target shooting. McKinney told the officers she was the owner of the loaded gun.
A records check on that gun, however, revealed that Russell Township police had reported it stolen.
Because Cylar’s weapon was not loaded, it was not taken and she was not charged with a weapons offense. Officers, however, cited her for making an improper turn and possession of marijuana.
