Boardman school board recognizes volleyball team

The school board recognized members of the Glenwood Middle School seventh-grade girls volleyball team for their undefeated season.

“We have a special group of students here this evening,” said Superintendent Frank Lazzeri at the board’s meeting Monday. “I don’t know when we’ve had an undefeated sports team in the Boardman school district.”

The team, coached by Larissa Santangelo and Jen Flores, ended the season with a perfect 18-0 record.

They also were champions of the All-American Conference tournament.

Board members presented the members of the team, the managers and the coaches with certificates.

Team members are Raegan Burkey, Evelyn Fleet, Kayla Golden, Hannah Henry, Madelyn Moran, Katie Stamp, Emma Tokarsky, Maria Torres, Ava Velasquez, Abbey Wagner and Ariana Wilkinson. Managers are Casey Wert and Gia Ditullio.

“They are superstars,” said Flores of the team members.

“They were very coachable,” Santangelo added. “They played really well together.”

Lazzeri also announced the Parent Teacher Association will have a meet the candidates night at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Boardman High School cafeteria.

Donald D. Riccitelli, Jeff Barone and Frank Zetts are running for two open board of education seats.

Members Mark Fulks and Fred Davis are not seeking re-election to the board.
