Rotary clubs unite for Operation Warm

YOUNGSTOWN

The Rotary Clubs of Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Struthers and Youngstown recently united to provide new winter coats to needy children throughout the Mahoning Valley through Operation Warm.

Each Rotary club chose a beneficiary organization. They include, Austintown, Salvation Army; Boardman, district elementary schools and Salvation Army; Canfield, Operation Blessings and police/fire departments; Poland, Poland Interfaith Food Pantry; Struthers, Struthers Elementary; and Youngstown, Harding Elementary and Youngstown Girls and Boys Club. The clubs are now choosing coat sizes and preparing the donations to each group.

Alumni Association chooses raffle winners

AUSTINTOWN

Winners of the Austintown Alumni Association’s annual raffle were drawn at the sports hall of fame game on Oct. 2.

First-prize winner of $500 was Emily Zokle; a second-prize basket worth $400 in gift cards and sports passes was won by Melissa Crowley; and a third-prize winner of a $50 gift certificates to Rachel’s Restaurant and The Manor was Margie Goldner.

The association uses profits from the raffle for scholarships for graduating Austintown Fitch High School seniors and to support mini-grants for classroom instruction throughout the school system. Membership is $10 and is open to Austintown graduates, friends and faculty.

FCSLA Convention awards donations

LOUISVILLE, KY.

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of Beachwood, Ohio, held its quadrennial convention in Lousiville, Ky. in October. Youngstown district president Bernadette Demechko announced $60,000 of donations were awarded to applicants in the Youngstown area.

Recipients and amounts include Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, $17,000; St. Columba Cathedral, $15,000; St. Vincent de Paul Society dining hall, $6,000; Youngstown-Spisska Nova Ves Sister Cities, $5,000; Ursuline High School, $3,000; American Slovak Cultural Association, $2,000, all in Youngstown; and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Warren, $12,000.

Monsignor Peter Polando, pastor and rector of St. Columba, was re-elected as chaplain of the organization. A donation of $10,000 was presented to the Cathedral of the Assumption Soup Kitchen in Louisville, a customary donation given to the convention host city.

Classes set at healing academy

CANFIELD

Healing Academy at Lifecare, 5537 S. Raccoon Road, will show teachings on fear, stress and relationships of Dr. Grant Mullen from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Discussion will follow.
