YSU creates Fiess Wolf scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University has created the Louise Fiess Wolf Memorial Scholarship has been established to support the women’s athletics program.

Wolf was a 1931 graduate of The Rayen School and a sports fan her entire life.

The scholarship endowment will be awarded to a women’s student-athlete enrolled in the Williamson College of Business Administration.

The first recipient of the award is senior swimmer Stefane van Niekerk.

YSU swimming team defeats CSU

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team outscored Cleveland State 41-14 over the final three events to beat the Vikings 127-116 in a Horizon League dual at the Beeghly Natatorium.

The Penguins trailed their Northeast Ohio rivals 102-86 following the 500-yard freestyle before mounting the rally.

McKenzie Stelter (270.38), Bethany Glick (244.50) and Lydia Scheringer (227.78) placed in the top three spots in 3-meter diving to start the swing, and Hannah Reynolds (2:28.64) and Kolbrun Jonsdottir (2:29.44) finished first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke to give YSU a 116-110 lead.

Madison Aranda, Jana Janson, Haley Fisher and Zsani Csado then won the 400-yard freestyle relay by more than six seconds to finish the victory.

Volleyball team falls to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE

Milwaukee rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team in five sets at the Klotsche Center. The set scores were 21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17, 15-11.

Five Penguins finished with at least 10 kills, but the Panthers’ offense picked up over the final three sets. Milwaukee hit .165 in the first two sets but turned around to hit .341 over the final three.

Sarah Varcolla led YSU with 13 kills, and she and Lori Vanbeek had a team-high six blocks. Vanbeek had 12 kills on a .522 attack percentage, and Sam Brown and Aly Ryan also had 12 kills. Lauren Thompson had 10 kills in 20 attempts, and Val Jeffery posted 53 assists.

Milwaukee also had five players reach double figures in kills, and Maddie Williams posted a match-best 18 kills on a .382 attack percentage. Jess Kalous added nine blocks to go along with her 12 kills.

Youngstown State will play at Green Bay today at 5 p.m.

Aaron has lead at Skate America

MILWAUKEE

Max Aaron took the lead in Skate America on Friday night, scoring a personal-best 86.67 points in a program to Nessun Dorma that included an opening quad salchow-triple toe loop.

“It’s nice to do something that I’ve trained and performed multiple times in practice and to do this at an event means a lot to me,” said Aaron, the 2013 U.S. champion.

China’s Han Yan was second at 86.53, and Russia’s Konstantin Menshov followed at 86.15. U.S. champion and Olympian Jason Brown was eighth at 78.64 after popping the back end of a triple flip-triple toeloop.

Russia’s Evgenia Medvedeva topped the women’s opening session at 70.92. U.S. Olympian Gracie Gold doubled a planned triple flip but otherwise was smooth in her short program, finishing second at 65.39.

Stegmaier leads Shriners Open

LAS VEGAS

Brett Stegmaier topped the leaderboard Friday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in only his fifth career start on the PGA Tour.

The 32-year-old former University of Florida player was 6 under for the round and 11 under overall with three holes left when second-round play was suspended because of darkness.
