Police say the scene of an afternoon shooting Friday was confusing after a large crowd gathered as police arrived.
Officers have arrested one suspect and are searching for two others.
Andrea Perry, no age or address listed, is in custody, charged with felonious assault, said Detective Sgt. Chad Zubal. Police have also issued felonious-assault warrants for Maurice Christian and Terrian Christian.
Police responded to the 1400 block of Woodcrest Avenue about 3:40 p.m. for a report of a shooting and when they arrived they found a man shot lying halfway in the street in front of one of the apartments. The man had been shot in the leg and stomach and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Zubal said the man, in his mid-20s, was in critical condition late Friday.
“It was chaos when we got here,” said Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the Detective Bureau, who was part of the team of detectives called to investigate
The crowd had thinned out eventually and things had calmed down, but there was a baby crying loudly in one of the units of the building where the shooting took place.
There also was a baby stroller knocked over in the front yard of the apartment building.
Bobovnyik said there were several children in the area at the time of the shooting, and they easily could have been hurt.
“They could’ve been hit by anything,” Bobovnyik said.
Officers collected at least two shell casings from the scene, and officer Greg Miller of the crime lab also dug a bullet out of the grass near the sidewalk where the victim was shot.
Another bullet hole could be seen in the siding above the front door of one of the apartments.
Several people who were standing around said they did not see or hear what happened.
