Board denies parole

WARREN

Pompie Wade, 62, who has spent 39 years in prison for killing Dominic Chiarella, 51, and injuring Fred Piersol, then 23, at the Austin Beverage Center in 1975, will remain locked up at least 10 more years.

The Ohio Parole Board denied parole for Wade until at least August 2025, according to the Ohio Rehabilitation and Corrections website.

Wade, who lived on Nutwood Drive in Howland, was on parole for manslaughter when he committed the Austin Beverage crimes when he was 21.

He and another man committed a robbery at the store, then Wade walked into a cooler where he had ordered Chiarella and Piersol to stand, and shot them both.

Bomb threat is made at Campbell Memorial

CAMPBELL

Nothing was found after a bomb threat Friday made at Campbell Memorial High School. Superintendent Matthew Bowen said the school was evacuated and students were sent home.

Eighth-graders were transported by bus first. Then student drivers were released, but Bowen said the cars had to be checked by bomb-sniffing dogs to ensure student safety.

The city police and fire departments as well as bomb-sniffing dogs and their handlers from Cleveland State and Kent State universities responded. Bowen said safety and security are the district’s first priority in such situations. The origin of the call is being investigated.
