Howland Alarm Co., 2489 Niles-Cortland Road, is celebrating 46 years in business this year.
The tri-county security and alarm speciality company is family owned and operated by the Matheson family. The company was started in 1969 and is now under second-generation ownership.

The Ohio Oil and Gas Association on Thursday issued a statement to support the Oil and Gas Severance Tax Workgroup’s recognition of the fact the industry is in the middle of its most- severe downturn in the past 30 years, and “increasing severance tax would exacerbate an already dire situation.” The OOGA commended the workgroup for taking this into consideration.
Volkswagen sales stall in the US

Volkswagen’s U.S. sales seem to have stalled in the wake of its diesel-emissions scandal.
J.D. Power says Volkswagen Group’s sales are expected to be flat in October, even as sales for the U.S. auto industry climb 8 percent toward what could be one of the best Octobers in more than a decade.
The Associated Press obtained J.D. Power’s forecast Thursday. Automakers will report October sales next month.
Home sales up in September
WASHINGTON
Americans snapped up more homes in September, suggesting that the U.S. housing sector remains insulated from global economic turmoil.
The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales of current homes jumped 4.7 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.55 million.
