Four candidates are running for Canfield trustee and four are running for two school-board seats. An * denotes the incumbent.

TRUSTEE

STEPHEN MASZCZAK*

Age: 40

Address: 4000 Fox Lane, Canfield.

Employment: Self-employed attorney.

Education: Graduate of Capital University School of Law; graduate of Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in science; graduate of Canfield High School.

Family: Wife, Anna; three children.

Priority: To continue to work together with other local government entities to realize economies of scale with respect to paving and other infrastructure maintenance improvements ... it is essential that we continue to focus on securing grant money for township projects.

DAVID KNARR

Age: 46

Address: 5202 S. Turner Road, Canfield.

Employment: Lane Family Funeral Homes and Lane LifeTrans Paramedics.

Education: Graduate of Walsh University with bachelor’s degrees in communication arts and general business; graduate of Canfield High School.

Family: Two children.

Priority: To listen to the voice of the township residents and act upon those concerns. I hear almost every day from folks who are frustrated that so many projects seem to go unfinished. The infrastructure of the township is a major concern to almost everyone I talk to.

ANTHONY (TONY) BETTILE

Age: 56

Address: 1380 Fox Den Trail, Canfield.

Employment: President of Buckeye Lawn Service Inc. and president of Storage and More of Canfield Inc.

Education: Graduate of Boardman High School.

Family: Wife; two children.

Priority: To assist the township in making our tax dollars go further without decreasing services or efficiency by formulating more partnerships, and exploring new sources for grants and low or no-interest loans to assist in infrastructure improvement and equipment purchases.

JOE PALOSKI

Age: 30

Address: 3663 Tippecanoe Place, Canfield.

Employment: Program assistant for SNAP-Education Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County.

Education: Graduate of Youngstown State University with a master’s degree in history; graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Family: Single.

Priority: I would hire a part-time employee to double our road department’s efforts in repairing our neglected infrastructure. ... I will apply for grants to secure extra funding for equipment and projects we urgently need.

LEE FREY*

Age: 66

Address: 305 W. Main St., Canfield.

Employment: Compass Community and Family Services.

Education: Graduate of Heidelberg University with a bachelor’s degree in social studies and education.

Family: Wife; three children.

Priority: To spend the funds we have in a prudent manner. I want to see the Canfield schools become a top 10 school in the state by 2017. I want to continue to listen to the community and parental concerns and respond to them in an appropriate manner.

PHIL BOVA*

Age: 74

Address: 311 Chapel Lane, Canfield.

Employment: Retired.

Education: Graduate of Kent State University with a master’s degree in education and science; graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in science; graduate of Ursuline High School.

Family: Wife; two children.

Priority: Provide the young people of our community with the best education possible in an efficient manner.

DAVID WILKESON

Age: 45

Address: 4641 Canfield-Niles Road, Canfield.

Employment: Owner of Tech Advisor LLC and partner of UpUp Aerial Imaging LLC.

Education: Graduate of Canfield High School.

Family: Wife; two children.

Priority: I would work to promote transparency between the administration and the community, improve communication between the administration and parents, expand the use of technology throughout the district, and develop more opportunities and options for both gifted students and those with special needs.

MIKE SORICE

Age: 20

Address: 7187 Paddington Rowe, Canfield.

Employment: Sorice Construction LLC.

Education: Attending Case Western Reserve University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history and political science with an expected graduation in 2017; graduate of Canfield High School.

Family: Single.

Priority: 1. Eliminate common core; 2. Institute a community- outreach program for the students to learn about the people and places in the area; 3. Start a search for a full-time, professional grant writer.
