UPDATE | UAW next to negotiate contract with GM

DETROIT (AP) — After United Auto Workers members approved the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles four-year contract, the union has turned its attention to General Motors Co. to negotiate a new labor deal.

Union members at Fiat Chrysler voted overwhelmingly to approve the tentative agreement, after rejecting an earlier proposal by a 2-1 ratio.

The union, based in Detroit, now will focus on getting a contract with General Motors, which has about 51,000 UAW members, including at plants in Lordstown, Toledo and Defiance.

It is expected the Fiat Chrysler agreement will be used as a template for a deal at GM, although GM is much bigger and more profitable so compensation terms could be higher for workers.

The UAW lastly will negotiate with Ford Motor Co.
