Ex-Miss America visits college class on beauty pageants
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
There she is in class, Miss America.
Former Miss America Kate Shindle has become the subject of an Ivy League classroom. A Brown University class being offered for the first time this fall is giving students the opportunity to examine how and why pageantry and femininity have become linked in the public consciousness.
WPRO-AM in Providence, R. I., reports 16 women who are enrolled in the Beauty Pageants in American Society class recently got a visit from the 1998 Miss America.
Students read Shindle’s book “Being Miss America.” They spent more than an hour in a recent class talking about her experience winning the title, the causes she spearheaded and her dealings with pageant leaders.
Senior Cara Mund says she’s competed in the Miss America system and “it’s cool” to see a role model in class.
Man on motorized wheelchair given DUI citation in Georgia
CONYERS, Ga.
A Conyers man has been accused of DUI and public drunkenness while operating a motorized wheelchair inside a grocery store.
Multiple media outlets are reporting that 48-year-old Danny W. Mitchell was cited Friday at a Kroger supermarket.
According to an incident report, Conyers police who were called to the scene found a disheveled Mitchell backing into the building and driving over plants. Mitchell was cited after he submitted to a breath test. The results of the test were redacted from the incident report.
Police say Mitchell told officers that he had taken the anti-anxiety medication Valium, the anti-depressant trazadone and had drunk a pint of alcohol.
Mitchell told WSB-TV on Tuesday that he can barely walk and was at the grocery store Friday to get a prescription filled.
‘Back To The Future’ fans: Austria issues hoverboard rules
VIENNA
It’s the day that Marty McFly landed in the future – and Austria’s transport ministry is ready with guidelines for hoverboards.
Fans of “Back to the Future 2” know that McFly arrived Oct. 21, 2015 – Wednesday. They also will remember the hoverboard sequence, with McFly being chased by Biff and his gang, all on flying skateboards.
These may never go beyond the prototype stage. But the ministry has issued tongue-in-cheek rules on their use to mark “Back to the Future” day. Its website describes a hoverboard as a “small vehicle for use outside of the road” and says a special license is needed for rocket-driven “Pit Bull” models.
It urges hoverboarders to wear helmets and to “be aware ... of possible additional regulations” for use over water.
