YSU golfers 3rd in Dayton

The Youngstown State men’s golf team finished third at the 13-team Dayton Invitational which concluded on Tuesday. The 36-hole tournament was held at the NCR Country Club South Course.

After an opening round 315, the Penguins were in 11th place following the first round. YSU improved eight spots on Tuesday with a 290, the third-lowest team score of the event. The Penguins had a two-round total of 605 while Detroit won with a 598 and Oakland was second with a 603. YSU finished ahead of Horizon League members Cleveland State, Valparaiso and Northern Kentucky at the tournament.

Leading the way for the Penguins was senior Bill Gaffney who finished tied for sixth. Gaffney carded a two-round total of 149 with rounds of 75 and 74.

Brandon Pluchinsky was 13th with a 151 following rounds of 78 and 73. Steven Sveda had the Guins’ low round of Tuesday with a 71 and coupled with his first-round 81 shot a 152 to finish 16. D.J. Holub came in 20th place with a two-round 153 (81-72) while Justin Hallapy shot a 166 (82-84). As an individual, Dominic Carano was 59th with a 158 (80-78).

The tournament was the last of the fall for the Penguins who had strong campaign. YSU won the Colgate Invitational, was second at the Northern Kentucky Invitational and third at Dayton.
