Facing DUI charge

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a woman was cited for obstructing official business and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after she was found passed out in a car in the 3000 block of Neilson Avenue about 5:05 p.m. Monday.

Reports said Kristin Gjoen, 54, swore at officers, almost punched one, used a racial slur and thought she was on a different street and was being arrested by Struthers police, not Youngstown.

Police responded to the street for a report of a woman passed out in a car, and when they arrived, a neighbor had awakened Gjoen, reports said.

At the police station to take a blood-alcohol test, Gjoen took eight separate tests and each time she would stop before it was completed, reports said. On her last test, the machine registered a blood-alcohol content of .265 before the test was stopped, reports said. The legal limit for driving drunk in Ohio is .08.

Gjoen was released to a friend, reports said.

Cited for improper turn

BRACEVILLE

Sarah Currance, 33, of Newton Falls, a bus driver for Newton Falls Village Exempted Schools, was cited for an improper turn for purportedly sideswiping a car at 4 p.m. Monday at the intersection of state Route 534 and state Route 5, Braceville Township.

The bus was northbound on Route 534 and making a left turn onto Route 5 on a green light. A 2006 Nissan Altima driven by Mark Paul, 35, of Zanesville, was eastbound on Route 5 and slowing to stop for a red light, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

As the bus made its left turn, the rear traveled over the center line and sideswiped the Nissan, the patrol said. There were eight children on the bus, but no injuries were reported.

Warren demolition

warren

The Trumbull County commissioners are not responsible for the demolition of the 240,000- square-foot former St. Joseph Riverside Hospital on Tod Avenue Northwest, as some had feared, the commissioners learned Tuesday.

They had a meeting with representatives of the Western Reserve Port Authority, Trumbull County Land Bank and city of Warren and learned that an error had resulted in the county’s temporarily becoming owner of the blighted structure, but it was corrected.

The kind of grant money that used to be available for cleanup of such structures is no longer available, said Sarah Lown, Port Authority senior manager for economic development. Asbestos abatement alone will cost $2.2 million, she said.

Man severely cut

WARREN

A Youngstown man, 22, suffered a severe cut to the lower back in an argument with another man in a house on Atlantic Street Northwest on Monday evening. The victim said he and his brother, of Warren, went to the house to visit a friend, but the friend accused them of stealing $400. As the brothers walked out of the apartment and walked down exterior stairs, the suspect followed behind, broke a bottle on the railing and threw the bottle at the victim’s back, causing the injury, he said. The victim was taken by ambulance to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment.
