Talk on gangsters scheduled Oct. 27

Beaver Police Department Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road. Allan R. May, an authority on the history of organized crime in the United States, will be speaking on gangsters and organized crime in the Mahoning Valley. Shooting in Warren

WARREN

An Idylwild Street Northeast resident was shot shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday. The victim’s home on Idylwild is near Fremont Street. Warren police had no additional details on the shooting late Sunday night.

ESPN personality headlines Press Day

YOUNGSTOWN

About 300 high school journalists and newspaper advisers from throughout the region will participate in Youngstown State University’s Press Day on Tuesday in Kilcawley Center.

The day opens with a welcome by YSU head football coach Bo Pelini. Various sessions will follow between 9:45 and 1:30 p.m. on topics ranging from making short films and sports journalism to censorship and writing a broadcast script. Among the presenters are Todd Franko, editor of The Vindicator; Kyle Brown of ESPN; and Trevor Parks, YSU sports information director.

Brown, who has worked for ESPN covering major events such as the NBA Finals and Monday Night Football, gives the afternoon keynote talk.

Diversity program

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University hosts the YSUccess Multi-Cultural Diversity Program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.

The event, designed for under-served, economically-challenged, first-generation, underrepresented students, will include campus tours, photographs with President Jim Tressel, a student panel, a faculty and staff panel, and an admissions/financial aid presentation.
