Free walking tours of Oak Hill Cemetery

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will offer free guided walking tours of Oak Hill Cemetery on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. A welcome table will be located at the entrance at 344 Oak Hill Ave. Tour guides will lead visitors to several locations, sharing history and historic images.

Oak Hill Cemetery began with the founding of the Mahoning Cemetery Association in 1852. For more than a century it reflected the city’s affluence and cultural diversity brought by the booming iron and steel industries. Rich, poor, black, white, Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish, nonbelievers, the famous and the anonymous — all were present in graves with and without markers.

In case of severe weather, the event will be canceled.
