Free swim for autistic people

YOUNGSTOWN

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, is launching a free swim program for people with autism.

A kickoff Family Swim for P.A.L.S. (people with autism who love to swim) is scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Attendees will enjoy pizza, activities and open swim time. P.A.L.S. is a program that offers people on the autism spectrum free swimming lessons. Parents and siblings are encouraged to attend the kickoff event. Families must register online for this program at jccyoungstown.org.

Lily Pond closing for 10-week upgrade

YOUNGSTOWN

The Lily Pond area and connecting hiking trails at Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed for about 10 weeks beginning Monday for construction work. The project aims to make the Lily Pond area more accessible for users of all abilities. The park will add boardwalks and observation decks to the area and will improve sections of the trail around the pond. The park also will add benches, a drinking fountain and an information kiosk.

Organized crime topic at crime watch

POLAND

Beaver Police Department Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrot Road. Allan R. May, an authority on the history of organized crime in the United States, will be speaking on gangsters and organized crime in the Mahoning Valley. May will have some of his books, ranging in price from $20 to $28, available at the end of the program. Check out his website at allanrmay.com.

Downtown crash

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating a downtown crash at Boardman Street and Vindicator Square on Saturday morning. A car flipped on its side and hit traffic lights. The driver was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Additional details were not immediately available.
