Boardman police warn about scam

BOARDMAN

Boardman police officials are warning township residents to be aware of a possible scam that has been reported.

The police department recently unveiled a new CARE Calls Program to check on the welfare of residents who sign up for the service.

Someone reportedly has been contacting elderly residents asking for personal information that they claim is for the program. Police say the calls are not coming from the department, and that they do not call people to sign up.

For information, contact Andrea Clark at 330-729-2014.

Citations decrease

YOUNGSTOWN

City police issued 45 speeding citations this week, the lowest number for any week since the current speed-gun enforcement effort began Aug. 18.

Lt. William Ross, however, said the number will rise next week as more officers are trained and more enforcement shifts are staffed.

Enforcement is via hand-held speed-guns that photograph license plates and record vehicle speeds, with civil-fee citations mailed to those accused of speeding.

To date, 3,217 citations have been issued, 166 of them last week.

Dems: Vote ‘no’ on charter issue

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Democratic Party announced Friday it has endorsed a “No” vote on the Youngstown city charter amendment banning fracking. The vote was unanimous.

“The members of the executive committee were unanimous in opposition to amending the charter banning fracking. The group knows full well this is a total waste of the taxpayers’ precious funds,” David Betras, party chairman, stated after the vote. He urged all city residents to vote “no” on this “job-killing amendment.”

“The charter amendment is yet another attempt to ban fracking in the city of Youngstown. This is the fifth bite at the apple. The anti-fracking group has stated it doesn’t care that the Ohio Supreme Court has taken away local control and knows full well the charter amendment is not constitutional,” Betras added.
