Woman sues, says rival restaurant stole secret recipe

BOSTON

The owner of a Massachusetts dumpling restaurant has sued three people she says stole her secret family recipe and opened a nearly identical eatery.

Nadia Liu Spellman, owner of Dumpling Daughter in Weston, says in her lawsuit filed in federal court last week that only three people knew her recipe: herself, her mother and her kitchen manager.

Her suit was filed against the three owners of Dumpling Girl, in Millbury, two of whom once worked for Spellman.

The suit says of 52 items on Dumpling Girl’s menu, 41 are identical or virtually identical to dishes on Dumpling Daughter’s menu.

The suit alleges misappropriation of trade secrets, unjust enrichment, trademark infringement and unfair competition.

A man who answered the phone at Dumpling Girl told The Boston Globe the eateries were “totally different” before hanging up.

American flight from Texas to Germany delayed by bees

GRAPEVINE, Texas

Some unusual travelers caused a delay for one American Airlines flight.

The travelers were hundreds of bees, found by a cargo crew under the right wing of a Boeing 767 that landed at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport on Wednesday. The plane had arrived from Las Vegas and was headed to Frankfurt, Germany.

American spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said Thursday that a beekeeper and the airline’s team did a “sweet job” taking care of the situation. No one was stung.

Huguely says the beekeeper safely removed the queen and the swarm. Cargo from Las Vegas was removed, and workers started loading bags for the Frankfurt flight.

But the queen’s scent apparently lingered. Bees quickly headed for the same spot.

The beekeeper returned and removed those bees, allowing the flight to eventually take off.

Police say man discovered living in church attic arrested

ARLINGTON, Va.

Police say a man who had been living in the attic of a Virginia church for three years has been arrested.

Arlington County Police say 42-year-old William Barker was arrested Monday and charged with unlawful entry. They say he had been sleeping in a makeshift bed inside the attic at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Arlington. Authorities say they also found food, water, a guitar and clothing in the room.

Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck says Barker’s room was discovered after someone working in maintenance repair heard noises from above in the kitchen area.

Police say Barker told officers that he would use a ladder to sneak up to the attic.

It isn’t immediately clear if Barker has an attorney.
