Boardman adds three new firefighters

Staff report

BOARDMAN

The fire department has some new additions to its ranks.

John Miller, Anthony Yanulaitis and Eric Nockowski were sworn in as township firefighters at a board of trustees meeting Tuesday, bringing the department’s staffing up to 37 firefighters.

Fire Chief Mark Pitzer said the usual staffing level is 38. He hopes to hire another person at the beginning of the year.

The starting salary for entry-level firefighters is $26,500 per year, he said.

The board also approved a roughly $10,000 add-on to an ongoing concrete-repair project at the fire station on South Avenue.

In other business, trustees moved to file an objection to a liquor-permit request from St. Luke Roman Catholic Church, doing business as St. Luke Banquet Center. The board’s long-standing policy is to deny those requests when they come from a dry precinct, so the applicant is required to seek a ballot initiative.

Trustees also voted to rescind the award of a demolition contract for a structure at 28 Boardman-Poland Road from C Crump Inc. of Hubbard and instead award the contract to Sigel Excavating LLC of Edinburg, Pa., because C Crump did not realize the demolition involved a commercial structure.

The cost of the demolition project is not to exceed $10,000.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26.
