Boardman’s Vivo, Pikunas qualify for D-I state tourney

MASSILLON

Boardman’s Jenna Vivo shot a 1-over par 73 to earn Division I district medalist honors Tuesday and qualify for the girls state golf tournament. Jacinta Pikunas, Vivo’s teammate with the Spartans, also earned a state tournament berth after shooting a 2-over 74 and winning a sudden-death playoff at The Legends of Massillon. Boardman shot 330 as a team and placed sixth, missing the cut-off for a state team berth by six strokes. The Spartans’ Britney Jonda shot a 91 and Tori Augustine shot a 92. The Division I state tournament in Oct. 23-24 at Ohio State’s Gray Course.

VOLLEYBALL

Jackson-Milton 25-25-25, Lowellville 17-15-18

NORTH JACKSON

Sierra Huff had 12 points, three aces, 12 kills, and four assists for the Bluejays. She was aided by Julissa Tomaino, who had 13 assists and eight digs, and Katelyn Totani, who had nine kills and 28 attacks. There were no stats reported for Lowellville. JV: Jackson-Milton 2-0.

Newton Falls 25-25-25, Campbell 7-11-8

CAMPBELL

Kate Wainwright had 28 assists and 14 points, Gabby Kline had 11 kills, and Lindsay Holub had seven kills to help lead the Tigers to a 21-0 record so far this season. No stats were reported for Campbell. JV: Newton Falls 2-0.

NEW MIDDLETOWN

In a hard-fought win, Crestview (11-10, 4-3 ITCL) edged Springfield paced by Mackenzie Daub’s 14 kills and 11 blocks and Taylor Oliver’s 19 points, nine kills and nine aces. Kasey Kohler had 17 kills and seven blocks for Springfield, while Brooke Bullen also had 13 points and Lindsay Druschel notched 43 assists.

Brookfield 25-25-25, Champion 24-19-21

BROOKFIELD

Tori Sheehan paced the Warriors with 12 kills, nine points and seven aces as Brookfield swept Champion. Bailey Drapola also had nine kills, while Katie Bender recored 29 assists.

Leetonia 20-25-25-25, Ursuline 25-18-18-22

LEETONIA

Aurora Smith led Leetonia with 13 digs, eight kills and four aces, while Haley Ward notched five kills, six digs and one ace. For Ursuline, Cassie Hanuschak had 12 digs and five points and Destiny Goodnight notched six kills and 11 digs.

BOARDMAN

Krista Johnson had 14 kills, eight digs and three aces for the Spartans (17-4, 10-3 AAC) as they swept Lakeside. Katie Platt alos notched 22 assists and five aces, while Courtney Platt finished with 10 digs. Rylee Cole paced Lakeside with 12 digs and Aaliyah Hunt had seven kills.

Warren Harding 25-25-25, Youngstown East 11-12-12

YOUNGSTOWN

East fell to Harding on the Panthers’ Senior Night. Taylor Phiefer, a senior, had four points and two aces for East, while Jena’ Johnson notched three points and Shamya Williams had two points and one ace. JV: East, 2-1.

POLAND

For the Bulldogs, Jillian Penman had four blocks, five points, two aces, and 13 digs. Jen Eich also contributed nine point, two blocks, 10 assists, and nine digs, and Gina Cooper contributed 14 digs. Emily DeGeorge had 23 kills and 13 digs, Sarah DeGeorge had 14 kills, 25 kills, and four aces, and Molly Barber had 27 assists for the Falcons. JV: Jefferson 2-1.

For Girard, Makalia Trebella had eight points and 20 kills, Lexi Crown had four blocks and four aces, and Melanie Bakes had 46 assists. Sarah Obradovich had 30 kills, 23 digs, eight points, four aces, and five blocks for the Falcons. Obradovich was assisted by Cami Hefner, who had 10 kills and 10 points, and Bree Hunter, who had 22 assists. JV: Fitch 2-0.

Abby Jarvis had 10 kills, Emily Krinos had 20 assists, and Kristen Fahndrich had 13 digs for the Eagles. Taylor Casassa had 10 points and two aces, Laney Lytle had 28 assists, and Maddie Buch had 14 digs for the Bulldogs.

Katie Julian had 22 assists and three kills, Taylor Ziegler had 14 kills and five points, and Gabby Miller had six digs and five kills for Niles. No stats were reported for Struthers. JV: Struthers 2-0.

Morgan Cleevely scored 14 points and Maddy Johns had 10 kills and five blocks for the Cardinals. Emma Hartshortn had 25 assists and Jessica Moner had 20 digs for Canfield. Cassie Murcko led the Tigers (10-12) with eight assists and six kills and Faith Grant had four kills and four blocks. Emily Robinson led Howland with five points. JV: Canfield 2-0.

Goals for the Cardinals were scored by Nicholas Koken, Paul Graziano, and Pat Brennan. Koken also had an assist, as did Chris Perry and Ahmed El Khafif. Boardman’s goalkeeper, Kevin Durkin, had 13 saves. JV: 1-1.

HUBBARD

Jordan Hernan scored the only goal of the game, and Warren’s goalkeeper, Dimitri Callow, had three saves. For the Eagles, goalkeeper Jake Shaffer had nine saves.

Poland 4, Canfield 2

POLAND

Marcus Trevis notched two goals, while David Watson and Mathew Holsinger each scored a goal for Poland (9-1-5) as the Bulldogs defeated Canfield (9-4-2). RJ Thomas and Ben Feuer scored the goals for the Cardinals, as Feuer also logged an assist, as well. Jake Buccieri had an assist for Poland. JV:, Canfield 3-0.

David Schwartz scored three goals for Howland (14-1-1), while Manny Perez logged two. Meanwhile, Christopher Tvaroch finished with three assists for the Tigers and Braden Elsea notched two.

AUSTINTOWN

Tiffany Aliberti and Kaelyn Puhalla scored four goals apiece to lead Fitch (11-4-1) past Lakeside. Maia Totterdale, Sam Sheely and Lauren Dolak also scored goals for the Falcons. Meanwhile, Lauren Dolak notched three assists, while Kaelyn Puhalla and Jackie Muccio each had two.
