Car reported stolen found in vacant lot

LIBERTY

After a man reported a stolen Mercedes Benz to township police over the weekend, Youngstown police found the vehicle Monday abandoned at a vacant lot on West Woodland Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side with its wheels and trim removed.

The car’s owner said the vehicle, which was taken Saturday from a garage on Mansell Drive, had a push-button start, which would have allowed someone to take the car while the keys were inside.

Additionally, it appeared that someone had broken into the garage by smashing a window with a rock, according to a police report.

Leaf collection set for Girard residents

GIRARD

As in the past, the city will require paper lawn bags for the annual leaf collection. Leaves will be picked up with garbage collection, but leaves that are simply raked to the street will not be picked up.

While supplies last, up to five bags will be provided at no cost to people with proof of residency (a photo identification and a utility bill) at the Girard Street Department garage at 943 S. State St. between Saturday and Nov. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Additional bags can be purchased at a cost of $1 for five bags.

Cemetery tour

YOUNGSTOWN

A tour of historic Tod Cemetery, 2200 Belmont Ave., on the city’s North Side, will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, led by local historian Steffon Wydell Jones.

Jones will point out some of the prominent people buried at the cemetery and talk about the cemetery’s history.

In case of rain, the tour will be rescheduled to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31. For information, call Jones at 330-259-2091.
