Museum curator to present program
VILLA MARIA, PA.
Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will host a special presentation by Susan Tumarkin Goodman titled “Between Two Worlds: Identity in the Work of Marc Chagall” at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at Villa Maria Community Center.
The presentation is sponsored by Rev. George Balasko as part of the Annual Nostra Aetate Lecture Series.
Goodman is senior curator emerita at The Jewish Museum in New York, where she has organized numerous exhibitions and has written and edited many catalogues.
Viewing images by Chagall, primarily from the 1930s and 1940s, she will focus on his duel identities. During those years, although the artist identified strongly as a Jew, his acculturation into Russian society often led him to absorb the prevailing religious symbols into his own artistic language. This lecture will undertake to reconcile the multiple strands in Chagall’s work.
Refreshments will follow the program. A free-will offering will be accepted. Registration is requested online at www.vmesc.org or by calling 724-964-8886.
