There is no evidence of wrongdoing in connection with the disappearance of Rainn Peterson, 26 months, from her great-grandparents’ house in North Bloomfield on Oct. 2, Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere said Sunday.

However, Altiere said his department will continue to investigate any leads that may develop.

Rainn was found in a nearby field two nights after she was reported missing, wet and dehydrated but otherwise OK. She was admitted to St. Joseph Warren Hospital but has been released and placed in the custody of her great-grandparents, Richard and Dora Peterson of state Route 45, by Trumbull County Children Services. The child’s mother, father and great-grandparents agreed to the arrangement.

Altiere said Rainn’s clothing was sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for testing for potential evidence. The sheriff said he does not know when BCI will complete its probe.

“Right now, we have no foul play whatsoever,” Altiere said.

“We want to finish all the interviews that we have been led to and follow any leads that come back from Rainn’s clothing and any reports that may come from the hospital,” he said.

Altiere said Rainn’s diaper was wet but not dirty.

“I’m familiar with kids. If she did have a bowel movement, it could have fallen out. There was no sexual assault, but I don’t know if she had liquids or food during the 48 hours she was missing,” he said.

Richard and Dora Peterson were cleared of any negligence with regard to Rainn’s disappearance.
