BOARD OF EDUCATION

Five candidates are running for two four-year terms and five candidates are running for one unexpired term to expire Dec. 31, 2017. An * denotes the incumbent.

AMY WHITE*

Age: 44.

Address: 8775 W. Pine Lake Road, Salem.

Employment: Teacher in United Local School District.

Education: Graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in education; graduate of Youngstown State University with a master’s degree in education; a South Range High School graduate.

Family: Husband, Rob; three children.

Priority: Keep quality programs and classes available to students. A strong desire to reinforce the positive morale that has made South Range Schools the place where families want their children to be educated.

JOHN SPIESE

Age: 52.

Address: 14151 Washingtonville Road, Salem.

Employment: works for Air Enterprises, Akron.

Education: Graduate of Boardman High School.

Family: Wife, Debbie; two children.

Priority: To promote unity in our community.

COREY YOAKAM

Age: 25.

Address: 12112 Woodworth Road, North Lima.

Employment: Teacher in Boardman schools; founder/president Boo The Blue Umpire Group (503(c)(3)charity).

Education: Graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in special education; graduate of Western Governors University with a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

Family: Single.

Priority: Find ways to save money that do not have negative effects on children such as cuts in the administration. Find ways to get money for the school district, without asking for another levy, such as grants or donations.

TAYLOR CHRISTIAN

Age: 19.

Address: 9499 West Calla Road, Salem.

Employment: Works for Canfield Dairy Queen.

Education: Graduate of South Range High School, Class of 2014; enrolled at Youngstown State University.

Family: Single.

Priority: South Range must be kept under local control; that means preventing our school from falling into debt, otherwise the state will take over. It is also important to hold the community’s trust.

BRIAN FOUTTY

Age: 45.

Address: 1310 Sageberry Drive, North Lima.

Employment: Teacher at Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

Education: Graduate of Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary math education and a master’s degree in special education; graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent.

Family: Wife, Julie; two children.

Priority: Advocating for all students by offering advice and counsel to the South Range administration and staff. Advocating for policies that are good for public schools and South Range schools. Returning our local tax dollars from Ohio’s “rainy day fund” to public schools. Modernizing South Range’s technology and curriculum plan.

RICH FERENCHAK

Age: 47.

Address: 115 Longview Circle, North Lima.

Employment: Giant Eagle Pharmacy in Boardman.

Education: Graduate of University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy; graduate of Boardman High School.

Family: Wife, Tracey; three children.

Priority: I am confident I can trim the excesses from the South Range budget while providing our children with an education that prepares them to thrive and succeed upon graduation. I would resign my seat before I would ever vote to raise your taxes.

MICHAEL (MICK) ENGLE

Employment: Doctor at All Points Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Education: Graduate of Northeast Ohio Medical University; graduate of Ohio State University Medical Center where he did his residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation; graduate of Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in science.

Family: Wife, Tammy; three children.

Priority: Communicate with the public. Our board has done a poor job of communicating openly with the public. ... Reinstate and expand important educational programs. I believe we can find ways to save money in other areas which would allow the reinstatement of important programs that have been cut.
