No. 24 Toledo 38, Kent State 7

TOLEDO

Terry Swanson ran for 161 yards and a touchdown and Kareem Hunt had two scores in leading Toledo. Toledo got off to a shaky start, but remained undefeated at 5-0, 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Kent State is 2-4, 1-1. The Rockets’ Diontae Johnson took the opening kickoff 89 yards for an apparent score, but the play was nullified by a penalty. After a three-and-out, Toledo’s fourth-down snap sailed through the end zone and Kent State recovered for its only points of the day. Toledo took over from there, and led 24-7 at the half, with Swanson and Hunt leading the charge. Swanson carried 16 times, while Hunt had 16 carries for 85 yards. Rockets quarterback Phillip Ely was 19 for 32 for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

Akron 47, Eastern Michigan 21

YPSILANTI, MICH.

Thomas Woodson threw four first-half TD passes, Conor Hundley ran for two scores and Akron capitalized on turnovers to beat Eastern Michigan. Woodson was 14 of 22 for 222 yards, with TD passes of 9 yards to Imani Davis, 22 and 39 yards to Jerome Lane and a 1-yarder to Josh McNeil. Lane’s first TD was set up by Austin Wolf’s recovery of a fumble on a kickoff and McNeil’s was set up by Zach Guiser’s interception of a pass by Brogan Roback. Andrew Hauser blocked a punt for a safety. The Zips (3-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) held the Eagles (1-5, 0-2) to 60 yards rushing in the first half and led 40-14 at halftime. Hundley gained 119 yards on 17 carries, with scoring runs of 29 and 5 yards. Lane had four catches for 104 yards. Roback threw three TD passes and was 23 of 34 for 204 yards.

Ohio 34, Miami (Ohio) 3

ATHENS

The Bobcats’ defense came up with four interceptions, including Quentin Poling’s 25-yard pick-6, to help Ohio beat Miami. Derrius Vick completed 21 of 33 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown and Sebastian Smith tied a career high with nine receptions for 91 yards and a score for Ohio (5-1, 2-0). Daz’mond Patterson’s 2-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 89-yard drive with 10:14 left in the first quarter and Smith’s 6-yard scoring catch put the Bobcats up 14-0 early in the second. The teams traded field goals to make it 17-3 going into the half and, on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Poling jumped in front of a Billy Bahl pass intended for Sam Martin, broke a tackle and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Miami (1-5, 0-2) converted just 1 of 10 third downs and finished with 253 total yards.

Bowling Green 62, Massachussetts 38

BOWLING GREEN

Matt Johnson completed 33 of 39 passes for 450 yards and five touchdowns to lead Bowling Green. Travis Greene rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and was one of five different players with a receiving touchdown for the Falcons (4-2, 2-0). Roger Lewis had eight catches for 142 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown. Ronnie Moore had a 71-yard touchdown catch. Blake Frohnapfel went 34 of 56 for 409 yards for the Minutemen (1-4, 0-1) with Tajae Sharpe catching 13 passes for 156 yards. UMass had 486 yards passing, close to the 519 of the Falcons, but only had 30 yards on the ground while Bowling Green piled up 206 for 725 yards of total offense. The teams combined for 67 first downs. James Oliphant had a 97-yard kickoff return for Massachusetts.

Northern Illinois 59, Ball State 41

DEKALB, ILL.

Drew Hare threw two touchdowns and ran for another while Joel Bouagnon and Jordan Huff ran for two scores each as Northern Illinois beat Ball State. Hare completed 29 of 32 passes for 363 yards for the Huskies (3-3, 1-1). Bouagnon rushed for 149 yards and Huff added 87 yards. Down 10-0 early in the second quarter, the Huskies scored four touchdowns before the break, beginning with Kenny Golladay’s 3-yard score early followed by a TD pass from Hare to Desroy Maxwell and scoring runs by Bouagnon and Huff. They led 28-20 at halftime. Huff scored again on the first drive of the second half to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 35-20. Then Hare finished out the third quarter with a 14-play, 97-yard drive and scored on a keeper to make it 45-27. Riley Neal threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns for the Cardinals (2-4, 1-2).

Western Michigan 41, Central Michigan 39

KALAMAZOO, MICH.

Zach Terrell threw four touchdown passes and Western Michigan outlasted Central Michigan. Central Michigan scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, the last a 15-yard run by Jahray Hayes with 8:24 left, to get within two, but the Broncos (2-3, 1-0 Mid-American) were able to run out the clock on a 15-play, 66-yard drive to seal the win. Terrell was 15 of 22 for 262 yards. Daniel Braverman had six catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Jarvion Franklin added 127 yards on 22 carries and an 11-yard touchdown on the ground for Western Michigan. Central Michigan (2-4, 1-1) was led by Cooper Rush, who went 23 of 32 for 321 yards and four touchdowns passes. Mark Chapman had four catches for 92 yards and a score, and Ben McCord had two touchdown receptions.
