YSU swim team wins opener at Beeghly

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team used three event wins each by Viktoria Orosz, Zsani Csado and Madison Aranda while diver McKenzie Stelter had a pair of victories in an impressive 186-112 win over St. Bonaventure Friday at the Beeghly Center Natatorium.
Orosz won the 200 free, 200 back and 500 free. Aranda won 100 free, 200 butterfly and the 400 IM. Csado finished first in the 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
In diving, Stelter posted an NCAA Zone C Qualifying mark of 272.10 in the one-meter dive to win by more than 30 points. In the three-meter dive, Stelter won with a score of 255.15 while Bethany Glick finished second at 245.32.
YSU returns to action on Oct. 16 when the swimmers compete at the Tom Stubbs Relays at Bowling Green.
Waynesburg’s Lawman earns top PAC honor
WAYNESBURG, PA.
Waynesburg University senior football player Jerry Lawman (Poland) has been named one of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Scholar-Athlete of the Month for September.
Lawman leads the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-2 PAC) and ranks fourth in the league with 511 rushing yards. His 610 all-purpose yards also rank fourth in the PAC while his seven touchdowns have him tied for fourth among league counterparts.
A member of Waynesburg’s Bonner Scholars Program, Lawman regularly performs community service at numerous service sites in the greater Waynesburg community. The Bonner Scholar Program, founded in Princeton, N.J., provides “access to education, and an opportunity to serve” to more than 3,200 students annually. Waynesburg is one of 23 Bonner Scholar schools in the country.
A Waynesburg Presidential Honor Scholar, Lawman spent last summer serving as an intern in Stuttgart, Germany for Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services and the third largest appliance manufacturer in the world. Through the internship, he was able to experience life as a member of the controlling department, which helps identify and reduce risk in monetary exchanges.
An international business major, Lawman carries a 3.63 GPA. Upon graduation he plans to pursue a master’s degree and hopes to continue his work with Bosch.
Kyle Busch fastest in Sprint Cup practice
CONCORD, N.C.
Kyle Busch was the fastest Friday night in the final practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Busch, who will start on the front row Saturday night alongside Matt Kenseth, turned a lap 189.354 mph.
Chase drivers had the six fastest times.
Kurt Busch was second, followed by Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brad Keselowski.
Defending race winner Kevin Harvick was 12th, while Kenseth was the slowest of the Chase drivers with the 25th fastest lap.
Jeff Gordon struggled again in practice at a track he typically runs well at, finishing 16th.
The winner Saturday night will automatically qualify for the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
YSU cross country teams to be on ESPN3
ORLANDO, FLA.
Cross country athletes from the Youngstown State men’s and women’s cross country teams will be featured during today’s ESPN3 broadcast of the Disney Cross Country Classic.
ESPN 3 will cover the event live, starting at 7:30 a.m. The men’s collegiate race begins at 7:40 a.m. followed by the women’s race at 8:20 a.m.
Interviews with YSU student-athletes Austin McLean, Ryan Sullivan and Alan Burns were recorded Friday in the ESPN3 Disney Studios and will be aired during the broadcast.
Austin McLean won the men’s race in 2014 & set the 8k Disney Classic Course Record.
