Illinois State holds off YSU, 31-29
YOUNGSTOWN Fourth-ranked Illinois State beat Youngstown State, 31-29, on Saturday night at Stambaugh Stadium.
The seventh-ranked Penguins (3-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) cut the deficit to 31-29 with 32 seconds left on a 14-yard Martin Ruiz touchdown catch, but quarterback Hunter Wells' two-point conversion run was overturned by replay. Officials indicated Wells' knee was down before he got into the end zone.
The Penguins' onside kick attempt was batted out of bounds by Illinois State and the Redbirds (4-1, 2-0) took over and ran out the clock.
An announced crowd of 17,715 watched the game at Stambaugh Stadium.
