YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners have approved an agreement with an auctioneer for a 3 p.m. Oct. 21 public auction of surplus property at the county engineer’s office, 940 Bears Den Road.

Auctioneer George Roman will get 5 percent of the gross proceeds, plus advertising costs.

Trucks, vans, former sheriff’s cruisers, trailers, generators and stainless steel dog cages are among the items to be sold.

Most of the listed vehicle odometer readings exceed 100,000 miles, with one former sheriff’s cruiser having traveled 259,720 miles.

Almost all of the items are described as being in poor condition, and many of the vehicles are more than 10 years old.

The commissioners also accepted Ohio Department of Public Safety grants to the sheriff’s office of $32,637 for impaired driving enforcement and $24,886 for selective traffic enforcement, with no local matching funds required for either grant.

The commissioners voted Thursday to advertise for bids for pipe-relining and manhole sealing in about 6,300 feet of 15- and 24-inch sanitary sewer in Boardman.

A $640,000 Ohio Public Works Commission grant will be used toward the project, said William Coleman, office manager in the county sanitary engineer’s office.

County Recycling Director Lou Vega announced an electronics recycling collection will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.

The drive is sponsored by Vallourec Star, the county and the city of Youngstown.

Participants may recycle their old and broken electronics, including computers, monitors, printers, cellphones, DVD and VCR units, keyboards, mice, stereos, table-top copiers and personal fax machines.

Youngstown residents may recycle one TV or monitor per household, free of charge, courtesy of Vallourec.

All other attendees will pay $1 per inch (diagonally) for TVs and monitors. All other items will be accepted at no charge.

The commissioners announced that their next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Lowellville Village Hall, 140 E. Liberty St.
