Fire station open house
NEW MIDDLETOWN
New Middletown’s Volunteer Fire Department, 10711 Main St., will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The fire and police departments will distribute safety brochures and free smoke detectors.
Local children’s books author Todd Bryarly will be present to sign his books about safety messages. Each book has distinctive characters, such as Sally the Ambulance, Pete the Cop Car and Bruce the Fire Truck, which all involve helping others in the community. The cost is $5 per book.
Children can have their pictures taken in a police car or fire truck and refreshments will be provided.
Steel Heritage Day
YOUNGSTOWN
Former steel employees will have the chance to reminisce about days gone by at Steel Company Heritage Day Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St. The event is free and open to former employees of YS&T Republic Steel, U.S. Steel, Sharon Steel, Wean United, Steel Door, Youngstown Foundry and their families.
The event will include a screening of a vintage steel industry video, a lecture by Dr. Thomas Leary and a museum tour.
Alzheimer’s 101
GIRARD
Alzheimer’s 101, a free three-session course, is offered by the Alzheimer Network on Saturday and Oct. 17 and 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Girard Free Library, 105 E. Prospect St.
The first session focuses on initial symptoms, progression, changes in behavior and current medications; the second, community programs and services available to help, including requirements to participate; and the third, suggested methods of coping with changes brought on by the disease.
Advance registration is required. Call 330-788-9755. Handouts are provided, and participants are not required to attend all the sessions.
Cemetery cleanup
EAST PALESTINE
All flowers and decorations at Glenview Cemetery in East Palestine must be removed by Oct. 22 or they will be discarded. Fall and winter decorations may be put on the graves as of Nov. 1.
