Boys soccer falls to Howland

The Boardman High School boys varsity soccer team lost to Howland 1-3 on Oct. 1. Junior Robb Lewis scored on a penalty kick for Boardman. Senior Kevin Durkin had six saves for the Spartans.

Varsity volleyball beats Fitch

The Boardman High School varsity volleyball team defeated rival Austintown Fitch in four sets. The Spartans were led by Krista Johnson with 21 digs, 16 kills and four aces, Katie Platt with 20 assists, 15 digs and four kills, Courtney Platt with 20 digs and Kaylin Burkey with eight digs, seven kills and two aces. Their record is 13-3 overall and 8-2 in the AAC. The junior varsity team defeated Fitch in straight sets, 25-21, 25-23.

Boys varsity cross country finishes second at Mahoning County

Spartan cross country finished second overall at the Mahoning County Championship on Sept. 29.

Varsity football beats Lorain

The Spartans won their second victory of the season over the Titans from Lorain High School by a score of 21-0. The game was scoreless after one quarter but then the Spartans scored their first touchdown in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from junior quarterback J.R. Ryan to senior Gavin Dill. Senior Adam Deeley kicked the extra point to put the Spartans up 7-0 heading into the locker room at halftime. The Spartans scored again in the third quarter with senior Mario Graziani scoring on a five yard run. Graziani finished the scoring in the fourth quarter with another touchdown run of six yards. Deeley kicked both extra points to round out the scoring. Graziani led all Spartan running backs with 129 yards on 31 carries. Junior Koby Adu-Poku carried the ball 13 times for 40 yards and caught one pass for nine yards. Senior Alex Duda caught two passes and Ryan completed five out of seven passes for 36 yards. The Spartans move to 2-3 on the season.

Varsity tennis drops match to Lakeview

The Boardman High School girls tennis team dropped their match to Lakeview by a score of 5-0 on Sept. 23.

Varsity golf defeats Lakeside

The Boardman boys golf team defeated Lakeside by a score of 143-191 on Sept. 23. Leading the Spartans was Cade Kreps (34), Ethan Thomas (36), Brian Kordupel (36) and Brian Terlesky (37).

Girls varsity soccer falls to Austintown

The Spartans lost a close battle with the Falcons from Austintown on Sept. 23 by a score of 2-1. Camille Holzschuh had 19 saves for the Spartans, who dropped to 5-3 on the season.

Freshman volley wins against Ursuline

The Boardman Lady Spartans freshman volleyball team improved to 9-7 on the season with their win over Ursuline on Sept. 26 defeating the Irish in two games, 25-7 and 25-8. Angelina Holzschuh served 16 points in a row, while Adriana Troutman served nine. Members of the BHS freshman volleyball team include Maddy Demetra, Angelina Holzschuh, Kailee James, Mia Lewis, Hannah Nawrocki, Brigita Ositis, Julia Schrembeck, Adriana Troutman and Delia Walkowiec. The spartans are coached by Alyssa Birch.

Girls golf defeats Ursuline

The Lady Spartans defeated the Ursuline Irish by a score of 155-198 on Sept. 21st. Leading the scoring for Boardman were Jacinta Pikunas (33), Jenna Vivo (39), Britney Jonda (41) and Tori Augustine (42). Kathrin Ritz shot a 52 and Emily Jackson a 55 for the Spartans.

Spartan girls cross country does well at Strongsville

The varsity girls cross country team ran really great races at the Strongsville Invitational. The young Spartan squad that consists of sophomore Casey Zaitzew, freshman Emily Warhol, juniors Abbey and Emily Evans, freshman Sophia McGee, junior Caitlyn Hadley and freshman Macy Potts all ran season best times. Some of the ladies even ran career personal records.

Volleyball sweeps Cardinal Mooney

The Boardman Spartans volleyball team swept Cardinal Mooney in three straight sets. Leaders for the Lady Spartans were Krista Johnson with 15 kills,11 digs and three aces, Katie Platt with 28 assists, six digs and three aces, and Courtney Platt with 13 digs and three aces. This brings their record to 11-3 on the season. The BHS junior varsity team defeated Cardinal Mooney in two sets, 26-24, 25-8.

Boardman Coed Middle School Cross Country finishes 5th place at Mahoning County Champs

On Sept. 29 in the rain, the Glenwood boys and girls cross country teams competed in Austintown Park at the Mahoning County championships. The top seven runners for BGMS boys were Noah Basista (8th), Tommy Fryda (15th), Jake Hughes (22nd), Matt DunLany (28th), Siman Mascola, Caleb Zubannek, and Dom Albanese. The top seven runners for the BGMS girls were Emily Olexa, Hannah Davitt, Abby Yocum, Jill Rivera, Mary Brown, Rylie Grantonic, and Lauren Maughan.

Volleyball wins against Howland

The Boardman Spartans volleyball team defeated Howland in four sets on Sept. 29. Leaders for the Lady Spartans were Krista Johnson with 12 kills, 17 digs and three aces, Katie Platt with 28 assists, 15 digs and eight kills, Courtney Platt with 21 digs, and Amber McMillan with 10 service points. Their record improves to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the AAC. The BHS junior varsity team also defeated Howland. Their scores were 25-18 and 25-17.

Boys varsity soccer defeats Lakeside

On Sept. 29, the Boardman boys varsity soccer won against Lakeside 2-0. Junior Robb Lewis scored off a deflected shot from sophomore Sean Buck to put Boardman ahead in the first half, while Senior Chris Dailey was able to win a loose ball from the Lakeside keeper to tally a second goal for the Spartans. Senior Kevin Durkin had four saves for Boardman.
