Jenkins gets 15 years in Cortez shooting death

David Jenkins received a 15-year prison sentence today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the Aug. 17, 2014, shooting death of Shawn Cortez, 17, during a fight on Winona Drive.

Jenkins, 18, was sentenced by Judge Lou A. D’Apolito on charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and aggravated riot.

Fifteen people were indicted for the death of Cortez, which took place during a fight. Of those 15, prosecutors said David Jenkins is the one who fired the shot that killed Cortez. His brother Dejon, 19, received a five-year prison sentence Tuesday on similar charges.

Another defendant in the case is expected to be sentenced this afternoon.
