Bills sign Harding graduate Herron
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
The Buffalo Bills signed free agent running back Dan Herron to address an injury-depleted backfield that could be down yet another player.
Herron signed on Tuesday after being one of several running backs to work out try out for the job at the team’s facility.
Buffalo is suddenly short on running backs after general manager Doug Whaley announced rookie Karlos Williams’ status is uncertain after he sustained a concussion in a 24-10 loss to the New York Giants.
Herron spent the previous two seasons in Indianapolis, where he had 389 yards rushing and a touchdown in 25 games, including three starts. The Colts released Herron last month by placing him on waived-injured.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2012 draft by Cincinnati, Herron spent a little over a season with the Bengals before being signed by the Colts.

USA defeats Panama
COMMERCE CITY, Colo.
Substitute Jerome Kiesewetter sparked the offense with a goal and an assist in the second half, and the United States beat Panama 4-0 in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying on a rainy Tuesday night.
Already through to the semifinal round, the Americans didn’t have much to play for and rested several of their starters. Scoreless at halftime, the U.S. caught a break early in the second half when Panama defender Fidel Escobar knocked in a crossing shot. Kiesewetter then scored three minutes later and Jordan Morris right after that.
Luis Gil wrapped up the scoring by converting a penalty kick, helping the Americans advance out of Group A with a 3-0 record. Canada finished second.

MLB increases time for inning breaks
NEW YORK
In the first year of Major League Baseball’s countdown clocks, between-inning breaks were clearly longer during the postseason opener between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.
The clock time was 3 minutes, 15 seconds Tuesday night for the AL wild-card game at Yankee Stadium, up from 2:25 for most regular-season games and 2:45 for nationally televised regular-season games. MLB said the break time was intended to be 2:55, as in previous postseasons, with the first pitch supposed to be thrown within the last 20 seconds of clock time.
MLB planned to make the breaks 2:45 for pitching changes and during extra innings.
