OVI citation

CANFIELD

Mahoning County sheriff’s deputies cited a man for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence Sunday morning who was almost three times over the legal limit for being drunk.

Reports said deputies were called to the 3700 block of Mercedes Place about 2:50 a.m., where a pickup truck had struck an electrical box. When the deputy arrived, a witness told him a pickup truck had just driven into the apartment complex across the street from where the electrical box is located.

The deputy found the driver, Corey Fusco, 29, and another person walking in the area, and both were very drunk. Reports said the other person kept interfering when the deputy was questioning Fusco.

Reports said Fusco failed a field-sobriety test and was taken to the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol to take a breath test, where his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.225. The legal limit in Ohio is 0.08. Fusco was given citations for OVI and failure to control.

Grand jury gets case

CAMPBELL

The case against a candidate for mayor of Campbell has been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury. Nicholas Phillips, a former city police officer, appeared before a visiting judge in Campbell Municipal Court today for a preliminary hearing.

Phillips is charged with felonious assault after an August incident in which the boyfriend of Phillips’ wife’s daughter accused Phillips of punching him in the face and breaking his jaw.

Phillips said he punched the man in self-defense and that he had intervened to protect his wife during an altercation.

Campbell’s law director recused himself from the case, citing conflicts of interest. A visiting Youngstown prosecutor is handling the charge against Phillips.
