BOARDMAN

Akron Children’s Hospital will break ground at noon Wednesday for an $18.6 million, 51,000-square-foot construction project at its Mahoning Valley campus on Market Street. It is the first of a four-phase project that will span the next several years.

The first phase, projected to be completed by April 2017, includes a two-story addition to Building A, renovations to portions of the building and creation of a new entrance for the Beeghly Campus.

Overall, the project’s first phase will add 47 exam rooms, including subspecialty and primary care, and a new service, sports rehabilitation.

Funding for the project will come from the hospital’s capital budget and philanthropic support from the community, said Bill Considine, Akron Children’s president and chief executive officer.
