Fowler cops get safety funding

Police Chief Michael Currington has announced that the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office awarded $65,000 in federal traffic safety funding to the Fowler Police Department, as the host of the Trumbull County Safe Communities Program for federal fiscal year 2016.
Fowler Township has identified that education about traffic safety, the importance of seat-belt use, distracted-driving education, sober-driving education and the Safe Community Program is impacting the safety and welfare of the citizens of Trumbull County.
Trumbull County Safe Communities will use the grant funds to attend events promoting traffic safety, offering educational and informational items as well as demonstrations. Safe Communities also partners with the county OVI Task Force and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Currington stated that officer Kevin Kuriatnyk will be in charge of the program as the grant coordinator.
Drugs found in crash on Tippecanoe Road
CANFIELD
Deputies with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office found three marijuana pipes inside the car of a woman who was involved in an accident just after 6 p.m. Thursday on Tippecanoe Road at Fairway Drive.
Reports said a deputy was called for a three-vehicle accident and one of the drivers, a 25-year-old woman, was injured and was transported to a hospital.
As the deputy was getting her car ready to be towed, he noticed a strong smell of burnt marijuana coming from inside. He searched the vehicle and found the pipes, reports said.
The woman is to be issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia. An accident investigation is continuing, reports said.
Crack found in sock after traffic stop
YOUNGSTOWN
Police found a rock of crack cocaine on a man they pulled over for running a stop sign on the North Side at about 5:25 p.m. Thursday.
Matthew Matta, 57, was arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine after he was pulled over at Tod Lane and Elm Street.
Reports said when Matta was talking to officers he told them he had drugs on him. Police found the suspected cocaine in Matta’s sock.
Cemetery cleanup
GIRARD
Fall cleanup at Girard City Cemetery has been scheduled through Oct. 11 for pulling flowers and cleaning graves. After Oct. 11, employees will be removing any plants on graves in preparation for upcoming holiday wreaths.
