Colin DeAugustine, the Phantoms’ goaltender with the most wins in each of the past two seasons, opened his season with a strong 34-save performance.

The only goal DeAugustine allowed in Friday’s 5-1 victory over the Bloomington Thunder was a power-play tally.

“The guys did great helping me out, and I think I was seeing the puck well from the point,” DeAugustine said. “The first two periods I gave up too many rebounds, but the defense was great.

“Nice to get the two points tonight and hopefully we’ll do the same [today],” DeAugustine said.

The Phantoms (1-1-0, 2 points) jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Youngstown’s goal scorers were Luke McInnis, James Winkler, Cam Morrison, Chase Pearson and Yushiro Hirano. Matt Alvaro had three assists and Winkler two.

For McInnis and Hirano, it was their first USHL goals.

“It was a great feeling getting the goal, but more importantly our first win,” McInnis said. “We’ll come ready to battle again tomorrow and hopefully get another win.”

Thunder goaltender Logan Halladay gave up four goals in the first 36 minutes. Hayden Lavigne made six saves in the final 24 minutes.

The Thunder killed off all four of the Phantoms’ power plays. The Thunder connected on one of their five man-advantage opportunities. Wyatt Kalynuk scored the Bloomington goal.
