Gov. John Kasich has appointed Dr. Marissa L. Mikolich of Canfield to the Help Me Grow Advisory Council for a term that began Sept. 30 and ends June 30, 2019.

According to its website, the council provides direction and guidance in policy and program implementation issues to the Ohio Department of Health and makes nonbinding recommendations to the agency.

Mother charged

A township woman is charged with child endangering after purportedly leaving her 10-year-old son alone in deplorable conditions.

Charged is Patricia Brock, 42, of South Avenue. She was scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court here Thursday evening. The charge stems from an incident Wednesday when residents told police they saw a young child walking along South Avenue by himself.

Police located the child walking back to his house, where officers observed animal feces, water and old food on the floors, according to a report. The child was taken into the custody of Mahoning County Children Services.

Police dog gets vest

LIBERTY

Capo, a police dog with Liberty Township, will soon be sporting a ballistic vest. The vest, paid for by Vested Interest in K9s Inc., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, is specially fitted to Capo’s body and can protect against bullets and stabbing.

Capo’s vest cost $1,050. He will wear it during more dangerous calls for service, said police Chief Richard Tisone.

Habitat gets grant

YOUNGSTOWN

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley recently received a $20,000 grant from Bank of America to help Habitat build homes, communities and hope in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

This grant, part of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Community Development Fund, was presented to Monica Craven, HFHMV’s executive director, at Habitat’s Lowellville build site at 20 Walnut St., where BOA volunteers will work Saturday.

Man pistol-whipped

WARREN

A man, 19, of Beck Street Southeast, reported being robbed at gunpoint of $300 and pistol-whipped at a house in the 2600 block of Beck Street at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday.

He said he was there to visit the home owner but after he walked in, he was robbed by two males. He was taken by family members to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Cops don pink badges

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Village police officers are wearing pink breast-cancer awareness badges during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Several members of the department have had family members diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Our officers are hoping that by displaying the pink badges with the center inscription of ‘arrest breast cancer unlock the cure’ will draw attention to this devastating disease,” said Police Chief Vincent D’Egido.

New fire station

NEW SPRINGFIELD

The Springfield Township trustees will break ground for a new fire station at 10 a.m. Thursday at 3989 E. Middletown Road.
