BCMS girls cross country place seventh at Suburban League Championship

Seventh graders Julia Gorby and Alayna Cuevas led Boardman Center Middle School girls cross country to a seventh place finish at the Suburban League Championship on Sept. 22. Gorby placed 19th and Cuevas placed 22nd in the crowded field of 290 runners representing four counties (Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula). BCMS girls were well represented by seventh-grader Bailey Moore finishing 36th with a time of 13:37. Moore was followed by eighth-grader Isabella Alvarico at 14:23, seventh-grader Ally Schwendemam 14:47, eighth-grader Jordan Solemen, and seventh-graders Isabelle Dwyer and Tara Pasvanis.

Glenwood Middle football beats Austintown Blue

On Sept. 23, Boardman Glenwood Middle School football team defeated Austintown Blue 14-12 to improve their record to 2-2-1. For offense, Zach Ryan completed 12 out of 17 passes for 115 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Rushing, Timmy Bowser went 15 for 60 yards and Connor Miller had a two-point conversion. For receiving, Connor Miller went 8 for 75 yards and a touchdown, and Bowser went 4 for 40 yards and a touchdown. For defense, Miller and Cade Pollack led the team with six tackles; Bowser had five. Richey Evans had two quarterback sacks. Bowser and Aiden Slocum had one interception each.

BCMS boys cross country places fifth

Boardman Center Middle School boys cross country placed fifth overall at the east Palestine invitational. Eighth-grader Mitchell Dunham placed second overall with a time of 9:41, leading his team. Patrick Hubert finished at 11:18, Justin Maloney and Christian Saab crossed the line at 11:20. Anthony Marshall and Egan Hare finish at 11:22 and 11:35, respectively.

BCMS girls cross country wins East Palestine Invitational

Boardman Center Middle School girls cross country team represented Boardman with a first place finish at the East Palestine Invitational. Seventh-grader Alayna Cuevas crossed the finish line first for the Boardman girls placing second overall with a time of 11:23 for the 1.75 mile course. She was followed by fellow seventh-grader Bailey Moore with a 12:02 finish placing sixth. Seventh-grader Julia Gorby finished eighth with a 12:13 finish and seventh-grader Ally Schwendemon finished ninth at a 12:18 clip. Isabella Alvarico 12:32 and Isabelle Dwyer 13:18 finished off the scoring for the girls.

Boys soccer falls to Austintown

The Boardman High School boys varsity soccer team lost to Austintown Fitch 0-1 on Sept. 24. Senior keeper Kevin Durkin had eight saves for the Spartans.

Girls volleyball defeats Canfield

The Boardman High School volleyball team swept Canfield in three straight sets on Sept. 24 to improve to a 10-3 record. Leaders for Boardman High School were Krista Johnson with 14 kills, 17 digs and two aces, Katie Platt with 23 assists and five kills, Courtney Platt with 12 digs, and Haley Blangero with seven kills and three blocks.

Boys golf wins against Cardinal Mooney

The Spartan boys golf team defeated Cardinal Mooney on Sept. 21 at Mill Creek Golf Course. Leading the way for the undefeated Spartans were Brian Terlesky (36), Cade Kreps (36), Cole Christman (37) and Ethan Thomas (39). The Spartans are undefeated in dual matches with a 9-0 record.

Girls varsity golf defeats Lakeview

The Spartans girls golf team defeated Lakeview by a score of 158-177 on Sept. 22. Top scorers for the Lady Spartans were Jacinta Pikunas (36), Jenna Vivo (38), Britney Jonda (40) and Tori Augustine (44). The girls team is now 13-1 on the season.

Girls golf beats Poland

The Boardman High School girls golf team defeated Poland Seminary High School 160-187 on Sept. 16. Scores for Boardman were Jacinta Pikunas (35), Jenna Vivo (37), Britney Jonda (43) and Tori Augustine (45).

Lady Spartans place fifth

The lady Spartans cross country team finished in fifth place at the Suburban League Championship meet on Sept. 22. Twenty-five teams from the tri-county area competed. Many of the athletes posted their best times so far this season. Top finishers for the Spartans were sophomore Casey Zaitzew (20:21), freshman Emily Warhol (21:29), freshman Sophia McGee (21:41), junior Abbey Evans (22:32), freshman Macy Potts (22:56), junior Emily Evans (23:02) and junior Caitlyn Hadley (24:07).

Junior varsity cross country places fifth

The Spartan junior varsity cross country placed fifth on Sept. 22 at the Suburban League Meet. This improves their season record to 57-31.

Soccer falls to North Canton

The Spartans fell on the road to the Vikings on a penalty kick late in the game on Sept. 22. The final score was 0-1. Senior goalie Kevin Durkin had 12 saves for Boardman.

Volleyball aces Girard

The Boardman High School volleyball team defeated Girard in three straight sets with the scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-16. Leaders for the Spartans were Krista Johnson with 14 digs, 13 kills and four aces, Katie Platt with 27 assists, Haley Blangero with eight kills and Courtney Platt with 13 digs. This improves their record to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the AAC. The Boardman High School junior varsity team also defeated Girard in straight sets. Scores of the games were 25-15 and 25-13.

Middle school cross country places tenth

The Glenwood boys cross country team ran at the Canfield Fair grounds on Sept. 21 competing in the Suburban League Meet. The top seven runners for Boardman Glenwood Middle School were Noah Basista, Caleb Zubanek, Matt DunLany, CJ Cordon, Aiden Corbley, Tommy Fryda and Jake Hughes. The Glenwood girls cross country also ran at Canfield on Sept. 21. The top seven runners for Boardman Glenwood Middle School were Ayssa DiNapoli, Hannah Davitt, Emily Olexa, Abby Yocum, Mary Brown, Lauren Maughan and Jill Rivera.

Volleyball beats Struthers

Boardman defeated Struthers in three straight sets on Sept. 21 with the scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-11. Leaders for the Spartans were Krista Johnson with eight kills, Katie Platt with 29 assists, Courtney Platt with eight digs, Amber McMillan with four aces and Haley Blangero with 14 service points. The Spartans are 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Boardman junior varsity team also won their match, 25-11 and 25-4.

Girls varsity cross country places first, 29th

The Lady Spartans cross country team ran races the week of Sept. 13 and placed in both. The ladies won their meet on Sept. 15 at Stevens Park in Niles, and they also finished 26th on Sept. 19 at the Spartan Invitational. Top Finishers for the Spartans are sophomore Casey Zaitzew, freshman Sophia McGee, Emily Warhol and Macy Potts, and juniors Caitlyn Hadley, and Abbey and Emily Evans.

Boys varsity cross country places 29th

The Spartan boys varsity cross country battled injuries and tough competition at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 19 and placed 29th.

Junior varsity cross country places 18th

The Boardman High School junior varsity boys cross country team placed 18th at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 19. Four members set new personal bests and improved their record to 32-27.

Varsity football falls to Perry

The Spartans lost a close contest to the Perry Panthers by a score of 13-10 on Sept. 18. The game was scoreless after one quarter. Perry scored 10 points in the second quarter while Boardman scored three points on a 20-yard field goal by Adam Deeley. Neither team scored in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Travis Koontz caught a 14-yard pass from quarterback J.R. Ryan to tie the game at 10-10. With 25 seconds to go, Perry made a field goal to gain the win. Junior Koby Adu-Poku led the Spartans with 103 yards on 20 carries. Ryan completed five out of eight passes for 86 yards.

Boys golf defeats Poland

The Boardman High School boys varsity golf team won against Poland Seminary High School on Sept. 16 with a score of 164-166. The Spartans remain undefeated. Brian Terlesky (40), Bobby Jonda (40), Mark Miller (42) and Ethan Thomas (42) led the Spartans.

Girls cross country places first at Suburban 3

The Boardman High School girls cross country team placed first in the Suburban League Meet 3 on Sept. 15. The Lady Spartans scored 36 points to win the meet ahead of second place Canfield with 56 points. Casey Zaitzew placed third, Sophia McGee placed sixth, Emily Warhol was seventh, Abbey Evans was eighth and Emily Evans placed 12th.
