Cleveland State defeats YSU, 2-1

Cleveland State scored two goals in a 44-span and the Youngstown State women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Vikings on Wednesday at Krenzler Field. Sophomore Kyler Lum put the Penguins (5-7, 0-3 Horizon) up 1-0 with her third goal of the year in the 34th minute. Lum blasted a shot from the top of the box and sneaked a goal near the right right post.

Cleveland State (6-4-1, 2-0) knotted the game at 1-1 when Vicki Havas scored her fifth goal of the season at the 73:21 mark. The Vikings took the lead for good when Ashley Thiss headed a pass from Erin O’Toole in the middle of the box off a free kick at the 74:05 mark.

The Penguins tallied eight total shots and had three shots on goal. YSU goalkeeper Katie Montgomery recorded five saves.

Katie Smith to speak at Liberty banquet

GIRARD

Former professional basketball player Katie Smith will be the guest speaker at the Liberty High School Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Oct. 23 at the Mahoning Country Club.

Smith is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and won two WNBA championships with the Detroit Shock and two ABL championships with the Columbus Quest.

The inductees will be: Randy Burns, Mark Demidovich and Joe Joltin, wrestling; William Creed, basketball; Kiki Cohen Vlajkovich and Elaine Jacobs, basketball; Bradley Fletcher and Dave Malone, football; George Rohan, baseball; Jessica White, track and field; and Gene Longo, contributor.

Calhoun inducted by West Liberty

WHEELING, W. VA.

Austintown Fitch graduate Jim Calhoun recently was inducted to West Liberty University Hall of Fame.

Calhoun, who graduated from Fitch in 1974, was a four-year starter at West Liberty. He played two years at offensive guard then switched to linebacker. He was named the 1977 WVIAC Defensive Player of the year after averaging 19 tackles. Calhoun’s 21 tackles against Sale and his 192 total tackles for a season are school records.

600 Club sets tourney on Oct. 11

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown-Salem 600 Club is having a Bowl 4 Games, Throw Out Low Game Tournament at Mahoning Valley Lanes on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.

Bowlers must be a certified member of the Youngstown-Salem USBC WBA for the 2015-16 season and a current member of the Youngstown-Salem 600 Club.

Red Wings blast Penguins, 7-2

Pittsburgh

Andreas Athanasiov scored two goals and Petr Mrazek made 36 saves in the Detroit Red Wings’ 7-2 victory over the Penguins.

Athanasiov, Dylan Larkin and Brendan Smith scored first-period goals, Riley Sheahan and Justin Abdelkader connected in the second, and Athanasiov and Anthony Mantha in the third.

Daniel Sprong and Beau Bennett scored for Pittsburgh.

Jeff Zatkoff allowed all seven Detroit goals on 22 shots.

Sporting KC defeats Union

CHESTER, Pa.

Jordi Quintilla scored the winner in the eighth round of penalty kicks, Tim Melia made two saves in the tiebreaker and Sporting Kansas City beat the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night for their third U.S. Open Cup title.

Sporting KC won the shootout 7-6 after the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
