Project seeking older tattoos

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Remember your first tattoo?

A Pittsburgh-based photographic artist will be in Youngstown on Friday and Saturday to take portraits of tattooed people who are 60 and older and gather the stories of their first tattoo.

Mark Perrott has been taking such portraits for more than 35 years as part of an ongoing project he calls “Ancient Ink.”

Past photographs from the project have been exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pa., and the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York.

The portrait sessions in Youngstown are free and by appointment only. Call Perrott at 412-735-2391. Every subject also will get a free copy of the photograph.

Perrott last visited Youngstown to take photos for the “Ancient Ink” project in the early ’90s. Those photos, taken at Artistic Dermagraphics, were exhibited at the Butler museum in 1994.
