Free movie nights

MERCER, PA.

Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road, will host free movie nights at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and Jan. 13.

The December film will be “Leave it to Beavers” and January, “Animal Homes: The Nest.”

Reservations are encouraged; call 724-662-2242. The films are generally family friendly but depict real animal interactions and the circle of life. Also, the farm will host a basket-weaving class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Guests will create a holiday Christmas tree-shaped basket. Cost is $20. Take a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish to help get basket dimensions correct, as well as a pencil, scissors, ruler and lunch. Registration is due by Tuesday by calling 724-662-2242. South Ave. OVI results

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post, in collaboration with Youngstown police, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on South Avenue near Indianola Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, during which 207 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

Of those, 10 were directed into the diversion area for further investigation, resulting in six arrests for operating a vehicle impaired, five summonses for driving under suspension, four citations for lack of an adult restraint, two citations for lack of a child restraint and one summons each for drug abuse, drug-abuse instruments and open container.

The Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency and Ohio Department of transportation assisted with the checkpoint.

Saved in ‘tent city’

YOUNGSTOWN

A man of undisclosed address told Youngstown officers he was beaten and robbed in the “tent city” beneath the Spring Commons Bridge, and tent city residents saved him from being thrown into the Mahoning River.

The victim reported that he met an unidentified black male at 11:30 p.m. Friday in front of 20 W. Federal St. and they went to have a few beers. The victim said he went to the man’s tent, and that is the last thing he remembers until waking up about 11:30 a.m. Saturday with scrapes, abrasions and bruises on his face and head.

The victim said other tent city residents told him his assailant wanted to throw him in the river, but they stopped him. The victim was robbed of his wallet and some money, a cellphone and a necklace. The incident was reported at 12:54 p.m. Saturday.

Free prostate exams

YOUNGSTOWN

Man Up Mahoning Valley, NEO Urology, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church are offering free prostate cancer screenings from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday for men age 40 and older at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church, 1812 Oakhill Ave.

Screenings consist of a digital rectal exam and a blood draw. Dinner will be provided to participants. The event is open to the public, but registration is required. Call 330-480-3181.
