Pope in Uganda; martyrs honored

Pope in Uganda; martyrs honored

KAMPALA, Uganda

Pope Francis is paying his respects to 19th century Ugandan Christians who were burnt alive rather than renounce their faith, the latest group of martyrs from around the world honored by Francis in hopes of giving today’s faithful missionary role models.

Francis will pray today at shrines dedicated to the 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic martyrs who were killed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of a local king eager to thwart the influence of Christianity in his central Ugandan kingdom. At Namugongo, where most of the martyrs were burned alive, he will celebrate Mass in their honor to mark the 50th anniversary of the Catholics’ canonization.

Seattle protest draws hundreds

SEATTLE

Hundreds of people marched through downtown Seattle streets and shops as part of a Black Lives Matter protest on Black Friday.

Police said they made at least two arrests and one officer suffered a dislocated shoulder when the crowd interfered with an arrest at the Pacific Place shopping area. The police said about 700 people took part in the demonstration, one of dozens around the country.

The protesters carried signs with pictures of black men killed by police and demanding an end to such killings.

Last year, police arrested several people during the demonstration, which shut down the Westlake Center shopping mall early and disrupted its tree-lighting event.

NEW ORLEANS

A mentally ill man suspected of shooting his neighbor barricaded himself in his apartment in New Orleans for about five hours before surrendering to police.

The SWAT team was called to the apartment building in the eastern part of the city after a 63-year-old neighbor of Dillon’s was shot in the back. The neighbor was hospitalized in stable condition.

Magnitude-6.2 quake strikes Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile

A magnitude-6.2 earthquake has struck Chile’s northern region but authorities say there are no reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter of Friday’s quake was 43 miles north-northwest of Taltal. It hit at 6 p.m. local time.

Chile’s emergency services office says no injuries or damage to infrastructure have been reported, and the Chilean navy discounted the possibility of a tsunami affecting the country’s coast.

Chile is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. In 2010, a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, and the tsunami it unleashed, killed more than 500 people.
