FirstEnergy probes holiday power outage

YOUNGSTOWN

The power outage that affected more than 6,000 people on Thanksgiving is under investigation by FirstEnergy.

Mark Durbin, FirstEnergy spokesman, said the outage was caused by a malfunction of the large transformers inside the substation in Cornersburg, affecting residents in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield and Youngstown.

Power was restored to customers after 8 p.m. – about four hours after the outage.

“It takes time to safely make the repair to the transformer in the substation,” Durbin said.

In the long term, the units have proven to be reliable, Durbin said, adding the outage just happened at an inconvenient time.

Police are investigating a burglary Thursday at a Kendall Avenue apartment.

An estimated $950 worth of items, including two televisions and a gaming device, were reported stolen.

Officers arrived to find the apartment ransacked with a broken bathroom window and a kitchen window that had been removed.

A police report speculates that someone likely tried and failed to enter through the bathroom window, came in through the kitchen window and then exited through an unlocked front door.

Police are examining possible fingerprints left behind.
