Eaton, Dibaba are IAAF’s top athletes
MONACO
American decathlete Ashton Eaton and Ethiopian running sensation Genzebe Dibaba are the IAAF’s world athletes of 2015.
Track and field’s governing body announced the awards on Thursday.
Usually, the International Association of Athletics Federations throws a gala party to honor its world athletes of the year. But it was canceled this year after former IAAF president Lamine Diack was placed under criminal investigation in France on corruption and money-laundering charges.
Eaton, in the decathlon, and Dibaba, in the 1,500 meters, both won gold at the world championships in Beijing and set world records in those events in 2015.
Basson has lead at suspended Dunhill
MALELANE, South Africa
South Africa’s Christiaan Basson shot an 8-under 64 to top the Alfred Dunhill Championship leaderboard when play was suspended because of lightning.
South African star Charl Schwartzel was tied for second, three strokes behind Basson, with one hole left at Leopard Creek. Schwartzel won in 2005, 2012 and 2013.
Zimbawe’s Mark Williams and England’s Matt Ford shot 67.
The tournament opens the European Tour’s 2015-16 season.
Starr participates in Favre ceremony
GREEN BAY, Wis.
Brett Favre had one more memorable moment with the Green Bay Packers.
With cold, driving rain drenching Lambeau Field, the Packers unveiled Favre’s name and retired No. 4 on the stadium facade Thursday night at halftime against the Chicago Bears.
Favre thanked his former teammates and fans as the crowd roared its approval.
His family was on hand as well.
“They get to see what it’s like playing at Lambeau when it’s cold, windy and raining. There’s nothing like it. I thank them so much for being so supportive all these years,” Favre said. “And most importantly, I thank you.”
There was one more special welcome for Favre when Hall of Famer Bart Starr was driven to the middle of the field on a cart. The 81-year-old Starr is recovering from two strokes and a heart attack.
The two former quarterbacks embraced.
The long-anticipated ceremony is the latest step in a lengthy reconciliation between the Packers and Favre, the three-time MVP helped revive a struggling franchise when he arrived in 1992.
The Packers won one Super Bowl and went to another during Favre’s 16 seasons, but the sides had a messy divorce with Favre waffling about retirement.
