No. 3 Michigan State 89, Eastern Michigan 65

EAST LANSING, MICH.

Javon Bess scored nine of his 13 points in the first half and matched a season high with six rebounds to help No. 3 Michigan State pull away to beat Eastern Michigan 89-65 on Monday night.The Spartans (4-0) were sluggish early in the game. But they led 40-25 at halftime and were ahead by 28 midway through the second half. The Eagles (2-2) were led by Ty Toney’ 18 points and Willie Mangum, who scored 10. Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine had 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Deyonta Davis scored 16 points and blocked five shots, Bryn Forbes scored 12 and Eron Harris added 10 points for the Spartans.

No. 4 Iowa State 83, Chattanooga 63

AMES, IOWA

Naz Mitrou-Long scored 24 points, Georges Niang added 19 and Iowa State beat Chattanooga for its third straight win.Monte Morris had 14 points and 10 assists for his second career double-double with the Cyclones (3-0). They celebrated their highest ranking since the 1996-97 season by hitting a season-high 14 3s — including six from Mitrou-Long. Iowa State stretched a 15-point halftime lead to 23 early in the second half in cruising to their 29th straight non-conference win at home. Casey Jones led Chattanooga with 16 points. The Mocs fell a game short of their first 4-0 start in 26 years.

No. 5 Kansas 123, Chaminade 72

LAHAINA, HAWAII

Wayne Selden Jr. and Sviatoslav Mykhaliuk both scored 18 points to lead seven Kansas players in double figures and the Jayhawks cruised past Chaminade in the opening round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Devonte Graham had 15 points, Frank Mason III had 14, Landen Lucas had 13 and Hunter Mickelson and Perry Ellis both had 11 for the Jayhawks, who shot 64.4 percent from the field (47 for 73). Kansas (2-1) will play the winner of the UNLV-UCLA game in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Jayhawks bounced back from a 79-73 loss to then-No. 13 Michigan State last week in the Champions Classic.

No. 9 North Carolina 80, Northwestern 69

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Justin Jackson had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead a balanced effort for North Carolina, which bounced back from a surprising loss over the weekend to beat Northwestern in the CBE Classic semifinals. Kennedy Meeks and Joel Berry II added 12 points apiece, and Theo Pinson, Isaiah Hicks had Brice Johnson each had 10 for the Tar Heels (4-1), who tumbled from their top spot in the AP poll earlier in the day after their 71-67 loss at Northern Iowa. Tre Demps led the Wildcats (3-1) with 21 points.

Wake Forest 82, No. 13 Indiana 78

LAHAINA, HAWAII

Bryant Crawford’s driving layup with 3.2 seconds to play gave Wake Forest the lead and the Demon Deacons beat Indiana in the opening round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Crawford had the ball at the head of the key for about eight seconds before he put his down and drove to the basket to give Wake Forest (3-1) the lead for good. After Indiana turned the ball over on a long pass, John Collins made two free throws with .7 seconds left for the final margin. Wake Forest will face No. 19 Vanderbilt, a 92-55 winner over St. John’s, in the semifinals.

Indiana (3-1) led 75-67 with 4:50 left but the Demon Deacons went on a 9-2 run to take a 78-77 lead on a drive by Crawford with 24 seconds to play. Devin Thomas led Wake Forest with 21 points while Dinos Mitoglou scored all 18 of his points in the first half. Crawford finished with 13 points and Collins had 10.

No. 19 Vanderbilt 92, St. John’s 55

LAHAINA, HAWAII

Jeff Roberson had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Vanderbilt, which opened the game with a 27-4 run en route to a victory over St. John’s in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. The Commodores (4-0) will meet Wake Forest, who beat No. 13 Indiana 82-78, in the semifinals. Vanderbilt scored the game’s first nine points and it only got worse from there for the Red Storm (3-1), who lost for the first time under first-year coach Chris Mullin and nearly suffered the worst loss in school history.Luke Kornet, one of Vanderbilt’s three 7-footers, had 13 points and seven rebounds. Federico Mussini led the Red Storm with 14 points.

Marquette 81, No. 22 LSU 80

NEW YORK

Jajuan Johnson hit the winning free throws with 10.8 seconds remaining and Marquette survived a frenetic finish to defeat No. 22 LSU 81-80 on Monday night in the semifinals of the Legends Classic.

Marquette will face Arizona State in today’s championship game. Arizona State beat North Carolina State, 79-76. LSU (2-1) freshman Ben Simmons collected 21 points and 20 rebounds in front of 51 NBA scouts and gave the Tigers their only lead at 80-79 with a reverse layup with 21.5 seconds remaining. But Johnson knocked down the two free throws and Josh Gray missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

No. 23 Xavier 78, Northern Kentucky 66

CINCINNATI

Trevon Bluiett had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for his second career double-double, and Xavier — playing as a ranked team for the first time in four years — pulled away to a victory over Northern Kentucky. The Musketeers (4-0) jumped into the Top 25 with lopsided wins over Missouri and Michigan. They used their balance to shake free of the Norse (1-3) in the second half. Six Musketeers reached double figures. Forward James Farr had 13 points and eight rebounds.
