Truck crash shuts down Route 5

State Route 5 west of Newton Falls is expected to be closed until Friday because of damage caused when a tanker truck containing 8,000 gallons of gasoline went off the road about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, struck a guardrail and spilled the fuel, which ignited, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The crash and fire occurred in Paris Township just east of Newton Falls Road. The driver, Derek W. Johns, 39, of Marshallville, Ohio, was taken to Robinson Memorial University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, reported the Ohio State Highway Patrol Ravenna Post.
