Phantoms fall to Stars 2-1 in overtime

LINCOLN, NEB.

Ludvig Hogff’s overtime goal lifted the Lincoln Star to Saturday’s 2-1 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms.

Defenseman Matt Miller’s first goal of the season gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Late in the third period, the Stars pulled their goalie on a power-play opportunity and Ethen Frank tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in regulation.

Stars goalie Patrik Virtanen stopped 29 shots to earn the victory. Phantoms goaltender Ryan Bednard made 45 saves

The Phantoms have two home weeks this: Wednesday against Muskegon and Friday against Team USA.

Justalittlesmoke wins again at MVRC

Austintown

Justalittlesmoke continued her reign as the top three-year-old Ohio bred filly as she captured the $75,000 First Lady Stakes at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course on Saturday.

With regular rider Terry Houghton in the saddle, the running time for the six furlongs on a track labeled fast was 1:14.74.

Owned by Marion Gorham, Justalittlesmoke was a $22,500 yearling purchase at the Fasig-Tipton October 2013 Sale from her breeder Belvedere Farm. Trained by Robert Gorham, she is now a perfect 4 for 4 at Mahoning Valley Race Course.

Ebby and jockey John McKee rallied to win the $75,000 Glacial Princess Stakes for Ohio bred two-year-old fillies. The running time for the six furlongs was 1:16.63 after splits of 24.33 & 49.13.

New track officials being sought

The OHSAA will begin taking application for new track and field/cross country officials on Dec. 15 and will accept them until Jan. 15.

Loew, Salinas to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Local boxing trainer Jack Loew and lightweight prospect Alejandro “Popo” Salinas will be the guest speakers at Monday’s luncheon of The Curbstone Coaches at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza. The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Curbstone Coaches are accepting applications for nominations for the 2016 Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted on May 1. For an application, call 330-792-2272.

YSU baseball team adds Gutierrez

YOUNGSTOWN

Fabian Gutierrez has signed a national letter of intent to join Youngstown State’s baseball team.

Gutierrez is a sophomore shortstop at Taft College near Bakersfield, Calif. He is a native of Selah, Wash., and is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound, left-handed hitter.

As a freshman at Taft, Gutierrez committed just three errors in 139 chances while boasting a team-best .333 batting average. He added 19 runs scored and 17 RBIs, and he struck out just six times in 117 plate appearances.

YSU signs 3 bowlers

YOUNGSTOWN

Emily Dietz, Ashley Kolb and Nikki Mendez are the first three student-athletes to officially join the Youngstown State’s bowling program.

Dietz and Kolb are teammates from Westland, Mich., who bowl at John Glenn High School, and Mendez is from Homer Glen, Ill. and attends Lockport Township High School.

Dietz won the Michigan Division I individual title as a sophomore, and she has earned second-team all-state honors.

Kolb has an average of 192. She bowled a high game of 207 at the regional tournament to help John Glenn finish first. She was a member of the state runner-up team in 2014.

Mendez averaged 213 at the IHSA State tournament as a junior.
