Y marks 100th with open house

YOUNGSTOWN

The Central YMCA, 17 N. Champion St., is inviting the public and current and former members and their children and grandchildren to its centennial open house from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Light refreshments will be served, tours will be conducted and multiple displays of historic photos and memorabilia will be placed throughout the 100-year-old building.

The event will enable community members who grew up participating in Y programs to reconnect and demonstrate the facility is still extremely viable and important to downtown by recognizing its history and giving the public a chance to learn about the $5 million renovation project that will change the face of the Central Y.

Free dinner

The Mahoning Valley Pride Center and YSUnity LGBTQIA have planned a free Thanksgiving dinner for the LGBT and straight allies community at 6 p.m. today at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave. The dinner is to help build community and reduce feelings of isolation.

Organizers of the meal recognize the holiday season may be difficult for those who face social isolation and are estranged from loved ones. The dinner is the organizers’ attempt to reduce such isolation while offering a community resource.
